AI Transformation Is a Workforce Dexterity Play (Not a Model-Selection Project)

Most companies now have access to powerful AI – often through tools they already pay for. Yet results are uneven. The gap is rarely “we don’t have the right model.” The gap is whether the organization can reliably convert new capabilities into new ways of working.

That’s the core parallel to today’s AI moment: the winners will build AI-enabled digital dexterity—a workforce that is willing and able to use data, automation, and generative AI to ship better decisions, faster execution, and differentiated customer outcomes.

Below is a practical translation of the digital-dexterity playbook into an AI operating model – applied across enterprises, mid-market firms, and SMBs – plus a PE portfolio scorecard for $100M-$500M funds.

 

The AI Parallel: You’re Not Implementing AI – You’re Rewiring Work

When teams say, “AI isn’t working here,” what they usually mean is:

  • People don’t trust outputs (quality, safety, accountability).
  • Workflows weren’t redesigned (AI is bolted onto old processes).

  • Data-informed execution. Make “show me the signal” the default behavior (with clear thresholds for when humans override).
  • Operationalized experimentation. Treat prompts, retrieval, evaluation, and process changes like product iteration – not a one-off pilot.

The organizational capabilities you’re really building (and can measure):

  • Data-informed decision-making (people can interpret, challenge, and use data/AI outputs)
  • Cross-functional collaboration (business + IT + risk + ops ship together)
  • Customer focus (use cases anchored to journeys and value moments)
  • Continuous learning (test >> measure >> adapt becomes normal)
  • Comfort with change (new tools don’t stall the org)

These are the same capabilities required for durable AI adoption – regardless of company size.

2) Engage from the top: exec sponsorship isn’t a memo – it’s participation

AI initiatives die quietly when leadership treats them as an IT program.

  2. Measurable unit economics impact (cost per ticket, CAC efficiency, quote cycle time),
  3. Role-based utilization.

SMBs: simplicity, operator-led adoption, and “AI in the flow of work”

SMBs win by deploying AI, where it immediately reduces load on small teams.

SMB AI priorities:

  1. Standardize a lightweight stack. One or two core tools, clear usage guidelines, and minimal friction.
  2. Make AI a frontline multiplier. Support replies, proposals, estimates, meeting follow-ups, bookkeeping categorization, recruiting screens, and SOP drafting.
  3. Train for practical usage, not theory. “Here are the 10 prompts and templates that run our business” that is better than generic AI training.
  4. Basic risk hygiene. Simple policies: what data can/can’t be pasted, how to handle customer info, and when humans must approve outputs.

SMB KPI pattern:

  1. Hours saved per week per function,
  2. Response time improvements,
  3. Fewer dropped balls (handoff completion, follow-up rate).

 

What PE Funds ($100M-$500M) Should Track Across Portfolios

Lower-mid-market PE has a unique advantage: you can standardize what matters across a portfolio without enterprise bureaucracy – if you measure the right things.

The PE mistake to avoid

Tracking “AI spend” or “number of pilots” instead of capability maturity and workflow penetration.

You want markers that answer:

  1. Is AI becoming a repeatable operating capability?
  2. Is it producing measurable value?
  3. Is risk being managed consistently?

1) Leadership & Operating Model (Capability Ownership)
