Engagement Overview

MILL5 partnered with Wayfair across multiple teams, including the Visualization and Control (VAC) team and the Supplier Integration Group, to modernize user interfaces, migrate critical applications to Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and build high-performance microservice APIs. The engagement focused on improving pricing systems, supplier integrations, and cloud scalability to support extreme traffic demands during peak retail events.

Challenges

Wayfair is a leading global e-commerce retailer offering more than 150 million home goods and furniture products, with over $15 billion in annual revenue. Wayfair faced several technical and scalability challenges that impacted system performance, supplier integrations, and the ability to handle peak shopping demand.

  • Developed high-quality, scalable microservice APIs for Wayfair’s Supplier Integration Group, enabling more efficient and reliable supplier onboarding and interactions
  • Implemented an automated, smart pricing system with an improved UI to support pricing, cost subsidy, and catalog management workflows
  • Migrated multiple applications to Google Cloud Platform, leveraging Kubernetes clusters and cloud-native infrastructure services
  • Designed and implemented DevSecOps-driven CI/CD pipelines, runbooks, and monitoring to support infrastructure scalability and operational reliability
  • Optimized core pricing services and website caching to significantly improve performance and reduce operational costs
  • Enabled Wayfair to process more than 50,000 requests per second on a single server
  • Delivered Wayfair’s first-ever downtime-free cyber holiday, ensuring uninterrupted service during peak shopping periods and strengthening supplier and customer confidence
